My father-in-law earned his PhD working on the engines that wound up on the Space Shuttle. The engine nozzles have passages that circulate fuel to serve as a head exchanger. Do you remember the Saturn V at Huntsville?

In other news, we watched “The Martian,” with Matt Damon. Not entirely plausible, nor entirely im plausible, but also not a bad film. Quite good, I’d say, actually. Your lot would probably enjoy it.

It’s on my list to see. Interestingly, The Martian was up for an Oscar in the comedy category.

Not to mention all the awesome tech that is derived from space travel for many other fields.

Guys guys, read the book! Almost every detail that sounds like it’s been dumbed down is in its full sciency glory in it. It’s pretty great.

I wasn’t knocking the film! I pronounced it “not (a) bad.” And I am an exceedingly harsh critic. And a recovering Sci-Fi fan. My daughter once said, “Daddy, haven’t you learned never to judge a book by its movie?”

Haha yeah I know, I’m just saying if you thought the movie was OK, then you’ll love the book. I’m a big Sci-Fi fan and a bit of a space geek, and honestly I don’t think I ever read fiction this accurate. I mean the story in itself is a basic survival story which isn’t my thing usually, but two things make it great: the tone and the science.

I only have one beef, really: The crew dragged along a whole bunch of supercilious crap that never would have gone on a space mission: paper, extra laptops, plastic sheeting by the roll, duct tape, and so on. And actual Sharpies... And glassware on the Hermes... And those big-ass exercise machines like you’d see at Nautilus. I forgive everything but that. I also think that in the film, they could have done more to give a sense of the amount of time that passed. Granted, they gave us Damon’s bare-assed body double, and lots of days exed out, but still. I enjoyed the film.

Yeah it seems the crew on Hermes had an all luxury thing going on! I think really the main difference with the book is the real sense of isolation on Mars. In the book NASA learns that Whatney is alive by something like a third of the story, when in the movie they immediately know, and that changes the theme a bit I think. But yeah it was an enjoyable movie, that’s for sure.
